What you need to know about Nigeria

Nigeria is the most populous country in Africa with roughly 170 million people.

The country is facing a humanitarian crisis in the north-east due to ongoing conflict with the Islamic militant group Boko Haram.

The Boko Haram uprising began in the capital of Nigeria’s Borno State.

It then spread into Chad and Cameroon.

The border area between the three countries is known as the Lake Chad Basin.

Boko Haram has repeatedly attacked schools, churches, mosques, and markets.

The group also kidnapped more than 200 schoolgirls in Chibok, Nigeria.

Over 1.8 million people have been forced to flee their homes. Over half of those are children.

The majority of those displaced are living in temporary camps in urban centers.

Due to the conflict, many farmers haven’t planted crops for the past three years.

This has led to extremely high levels of food insecurity.

In December 2016, a possible famine alert was issued in areas inaccessible due to the Boko Haram insurgency.

A lack of conclusive data out of these areas makes it impossible to confirm a famine.

However, 5.2 million people in the region are estimated to not have enough to eat in 2017.

And 450,000 children under five may suffer from severe acute malnutrition.

Ongoing violence and insecurity make it very difficult for humanitarian groups to reach people in need.

International Medical Corps has worked across Nigeria since 2013.

Our programs include health, nutrition, water and sanitation,

…gender-based violence prevention and response, and food security.

We’re part of a massive polio vaccination effort for children under five years old.

We’re also responding to the emergency needs of displaced people in Chad and Cameroon.
